Also known as Sodium Hydroxide NaOH, Caustic soda, is derived from the electrolysis of saltwater. It is a strong alkali that can dissolve grease, oils, and fats, making it useful in household cleaning products such as drain cleaners, oven cleaners, and degreasers. In soap making, it is used to saponify oils and create solid soap bars. Caustic soda can also be used in cosmetics and skin care formulations to adjust the pH levels and as a neutralizing agent, typically at a concentration of 0.5-5%. However, it is important to handle it with care as it is highly corrosive and can cause severe burns and eye damage.
